If That Buzzing in Your Ear is not a Bee, It May be Tinnitus
Tinnitus is a disorder that is characterized by a buzzing, swishing or ringing in the ears. It is actually the perception of the normal body sounds when outside noise is masked. To illustrate this concept, if one goes in a sound-proof room, you will become aware or you may hear your normal body sounds. That is how tinnitus is perceived. It is more of a nuisance than a real disease. Tinnitus can actually manifest in one or both ears or even in the head. This is due to the fact that this disorder may arise from the 4 sections of the ear, i.e., inner ear, outer ear, middle ear and the brains. Some cases of this disorder happen intermittently. However, there are also cases wherein the ringing in the ears is continuous. This becomes very distressing to the patient and tinnitus treatment becomes imperative.
What causes this disorder? There are actually many possible causes of tinnitus. Some causes are really very simple like earwax blocking the external sound thereby allowing the individual to hear his body sounds. Simple cleaning of the ear would solve this problem. However, there are also some more complex causes. Examples of these causes are infections and fluids or other diseases in the ear drum or the middle ear bones, hearing nerve impairment, damage to tiny endings of the hearing nerve in the ear, exposure to very loud noise, some medications and even old age. Other causes are as a side effect of more serious diseases such as brain tumors or aneurysm.
If a person is diagnosed of having tinnitus, the doctor would first try to determine the cause through a thorough evaluation and then decide on the treatment to be pursued. There are actually many claims of tinnitus treatment. However, equal number of disclaimers also comes out. Many say that tinnitus may either just die its natural death or something that the patient has to live with all his life. Whatever the truth is, there are still a huge number of treatments being prescribed depending on the type of tinnitus the patient has.
For “objective tinnitus”, wherein a doctor may actually perceive a sound coming from the person’s ear caused by muscle spasms or pulse beats, treatments may be the clearing of the ear canal, gamman knife radiosurgery, teflon implant to shield the cochlea, botulinum toxin and propanolol and clonazepam. The treatment may vary for the subjective type of tinnitus, wherein the tinnitus is caused by otologic disorders (same ones that cause hearing loss). Various drugs or nutrient intake may be prescribed, electric stimulation, psychological treatment, surgery and other cures may be done depending on the cause and symptom.
Although to some this disorder may not be a serious problem, there are many people that treat it like the plague. It is always better to prevent than to cure. Therefore, to those who are taking for granted the importance of taking care of their ears, now is the time to be more vigilant and be careful with the things you put in your ears or the loudness of the sound around you. Tinnitus is something that you may have to carry all your life so never risk acquiring it. The next time you hear a buzzing sound and there are no bees around, go straight to your doctor and do not allow the problem to worsen.
