Living with Tinnitus

I'd be happy to learn new things about Tinnitus. Information is growing very fast, and although I try to bring as often and as much new info about Tinnitus, Its still impossible to bring and find all the new things that are learnt about it. Please feel free to post comment if you have more info to share about the ear ringing problem.

It can be stressful to live with a constant sound in your ears or in your head, especially if it seems like you are the only one who can hear it. A constant ear ringing can be both depressing and bothersome, especially if you do not know how to deal with it or what to call it. This condition is known as tinnitus and is prevalent is most industrialized societies which are exposed to high levels of noise. According to a survey done in 1994-1995 by the US National Health males are more likely to suffer from tinnitus than females. It usually begins at the age of 40, then peaks at 65-79 years old then declines at 80 years old. Marked difference between male and female tinitus is shown between the ages of 40m, thru 17, with the male being consistently higher. This is may be because men are more exposed to environmental noise than women.

Unfortunately, there is yet to be a concrete and effective tinnitus treatment to be manufactured. Some drug prescriptions are available to lessen the ringing in the ears, but it cannot cure tinnitus completely. Sufferers must learn to cope with this phantom sounds until it eventually, and hopefully, goes away. People with tinnitus should learn and understand the causes and nature of their condition. It is important to remember and understand that although some patients suffer from mental anxiety, stress and depression, tinnitus is not a mental condition. Rather than an illness, the constant ringing of the ears could be a symptom of an underlying ear defect, drug side effects and in some rare cases a heart or neurological problem.

Constant ear ringing can happen as one ages. It can also be caused by exposure to loud sounds coming from machines and equipments. High levels of music from rock concerts, traffic noise, environmental noise, mp3 players and other noise sources can also contribute to tinnitus. Stress and high blood pressure are also common causes. Aspirin, allergies and other medications can also result in ringing in ears.

Living with tinnitus shouldn’t be hard. One must only learn the proper way to take care of one’s ears. People who suffer from these phantom sounds must learn to mask the ringing or buzzing sounds with external noise such as ticking of clocks, or low hissing in the radio. There are maskers that can effectively drown the buzzing or whining inside the head or the ear. Avoid stressful situations as much as possible. Get enough rest, sleep and exercise. Protect your ear from loud noises such as by wearing comfortable ear plugs or ear muffs. Avoid exposure to loud noise as much as possible. If you love music, play your music in tolerable and comfortable volumes. Stop worrying or concentrating on the noise inside your hear or ears. It would only get louder as you concentrate on the noise. Get help by attending counseling or tinnitus retraining therapy. It combines maskers with counseling in order to lessen the perception of ear ringing. Consult your doctor for prescription drugs which you can take.

Tinnits – Cosmodic Therapy

In any war intelligence is one of the most important things. In the war against Tinnitus its even more important, cause of the ignorance of western medicine. I hope this post will shed more light about Tinnitus. Post a comment if you liked it.

I would like to share with you an email I received:

Hi Naren,

No I’m fine over t he past weeks since having Cosmodic Therapy my tinnitus has been declining, and on thursday my left ear crackled, popped and cleared which I haven’t felt in months and this morning there was virtually no noises at all in my ears, except a very very faint fizz. But I think we’ve all got that it’s only natural. I reccommend cosmodic therapy/scenar, there are also practitioners in the U.S and Canada, but it’s still a new phenomenon. No doubt conventional medicines doctors will be using them widespread in say 15 years time.

Do you have tinnitus, or have experienced it? Another treatment that shouldn’t be overlooked is spiritual healing, it’s a science really not so much a religious thing.

Tips in Performing Home Treatment For Tinnitus

How can we cure Tinnitus? How come its so hard to get rid of that "small" and terrible condition? Why do doctors suggest so many different treatments? The only way to answer these questions is by learning about our Tinnitus. What is it actually? Click here to learn how to stop your Tinnitus permanently.

When considering home treatment for tinnitus, there are many available methods to do so. They may fall under lifestyle changes, or coping with the existing symptoms of ringing noises.

Cutting back on or stopping entirely the consumption of alcoholic drinks and caffeine containing beverages such as coffee or tea may help reduce tinnitus. Nicotine is another possible trigger because it reduces the flow of blood to the ear. So, people suffering from tinnitus should stop smoking or using other tobacco products. Drinkers and smokers should try to reduce their intake if they are having problems with tinnitus.

The use of certain drugs, NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, may also contribute to tinnitus. These include aspirin, naproxen, and ibuprofen. Tinnitus sufferers should limit their use of these drugs to avoid worsening their symptoms.

Regular exercise, in addition to providing other health benefits, also enhances blood flow. By improving the flow of blood to ear structures, it can relieve tinnitus to an extent. Be careful, however, of exercises that involve keeping the neck hyperextended, for instance bicycle riding. These should be done only in moderation and not over extended periods of time.

Apart from these lifestyle changes, some other measures can be taken to deal with the constant sound in the ears characteristic of tinnitus. Wearing protective earmuffs or earplugs can help to block out noises that may worsen tinnitus. Better yet, avoid these noises entirely, if possible. The use of various relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga may help to relieve fatigue and stress that can make tinnitus worse. Background noise such as white noise, soft music, and other soothing sounds helps make it easier to ignore tinnitus, especially in otherwise quiet places.

Ginkgo biloba, an herbal supplement, is also suggested as an effective way to relieve tinnitus, but it is not yet universally accepted. Some studies show benefits, while others do not. You could try it to see if it works for you.

While performing home treatment, one should also be careful to watch out for the following symptoms:

Loss of coordination, weakness, or numbness on a side of your body or of the face can be due to nerve damage. The development of symptoms like the loss of hearing, loss of balance, vertigo, vomiting, or nausea, should also be watched out for. The localization of tinnitus to just one ear may also indicate a serious development.

When home treatments fail to relieve tinnitus even after a week (in case of ear injury) or two, it would be best to consult a doctor. Another case when home treatment for tinnitus might not be enough would be when symptoms worsen severely, or when your tinnitus attacks occur more frequently.

Drowning Out the Phantom Sounds: Coping with Tinnitus

Thanks for returning to the main Tinnitus blog, I try to put here all the info I can find, online and offline , to let people know about their Tinnitus, and learn how it happend, what can be done, and most important not to loose hope. Please, leave a comment about this post and tell other Tinitus sufferes what you have been going through.

Drowning Out the Phantom Sounds: Coping with Tinnitus

Despite the absence of external noise, some people still hear a buzzing, ringing, whining or whirring noise inside their head or ears. It can be both disturbing and distressing to hear sounds that most people do not hear. It can be isolating and depressing at times, especially if other people fail to understand the nature of this condition. This constant ear ringing is a condition called tinnitus. It can be described in different types. The most common is the tonal tinnitus or ringing in the ears. It is a continuous single note sound. Pulsatile tinnitus is a continuous sound pulsating in time with the heartbeat. The sound can also be described as roaring, buzzing, whistling or hissing noise. Sometimes beeping, musical notes and Morse code-like signals can also be heard. The rarest type is objective tinnitus where the noise coming from the patient’s ear can also be heard by other people.

This ringing of the ears most often occurs among people of advanced age. Usually, tinnitus is connected with an ear infection, a blocked ear canal and wax-build up. It can also be a symptom of eventual hearing loss, Meniere’s disease and otosclerosis. Ringing of the ears can also be caused by head and neck trauma. Some medications can cause tinnitus as a side effect. The most common is aspirin or aspirin related medications. Rarely, tinnitus is a symptom of brain tumor, aneurysm or a heart condition. Although hearing this phantom sounds are associated with depression, mental anxiety and stress, tinnitus is not a mental disorder.

Tinnitus is rampant among developed countries with high levels of environmental noise. Approximately 50 millions Americans experience tinnitus.  About 12 million experiences severe form of tinitus and about 2 million are seriously affected by it impedes with normal everyday functions. Tinnitus is more common among male than female. This might be because men are more likely to be exposed to high noise levels. A study was also conducted in order to identify if tinnitus is hereditary. Scientists have not discovered any “tinnitus gene”, but have identified genes connected to rare forms of hearing loss such as acoustic Neuroma, Meniere’s disease and temporomandibular joint dysfunction. These disorders have tinnitus as a side effect.

The ear ringing can either go away on its own or continue for the rest of the patient’s life. Either way, people suffering from continuous ringing in ears must cope with the phantom sounds. Various drugs are available in order to help patients cope with the condition. The most common tinnitus treatment is masking. Electronic devices can produce competing external noise in order to drown out the sounds within the ear or head. Simple household devices can be used such as a clock ticking or a radio hissing. Patients can choose whatever masking methods they are most comfortable with. People suffering from depression, isolation and anxiety resulting from tinnitus should seek counseling. It is important to address the depression rather than trying to repress the noise.

People with tinnitus should be more careful about taking care of their ears. Wear proper protection when operating loud equipment or machineries. Wear ear muffs and ear plugs when you are going to be exposed to high levels of noise. Rather than using a cotton swab or Q-tips, go to your EENT to have your ears cleaned. For further understanding of your condition, always consult your doctor.

3 Cs of Tinnitus: Common Causes and Cures

Here is another post about Tinnitus the ear ringing "disease", as I always say its important to learn and get updated about Tinitus since its one of those things that western medicine many times cant really supply a full healing, and we the suffereres need to take care of ourselfs.

We often take our hearing for granted. With the increasing noise levels in the modern world, the risk to ear damage also becomes rampant. Constant exposure to loud music such as loud rock concerts, high volume music from mp3 players, traffic noises and loud heavy equipments could result from mild to severe tinnitus. Tinitus is a constant ringing of the ears. It can be perceived either in one ear, both ears or in the head. However, the sound may vary from different persons. It can take the form of a high pitched whining, hissing, whistling, beeping, crickets or even humming, songs, tunes, waves and wind sounds. The intensity of the sounds varies whether the tinnitus is mild or severe. Nevertheless constant ringing in the ears could be very stressful for the person suffering from tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying disease rather than an illness in itself. Its causes can range from ear-related disorders and rarely to a more serious heart or neurological problem. People who suffer from constant ringing of ears may suffer from mental stress, depression and anxiety. However, it is not a mental condition. It is said that approximately 50 million Americans suffer from tinnitus. According to some clinical studies, tinnitus occurs more frequently in industrialized countries since people are more exposed to increasing noise pollution.

One of the most common causes of tinnitus is exposure to loud music, traffic noises and loud machineries. It can also be due to ear infections, impacted ear wax and nose allergies that causes wax build-up. Some medications can also cause ringing of the ears as a side effect. Examples of these medications are aspirin and Quinidine. One study suggests that the ringing is caused by loss of minute hair cells in the inner ear called, stereocilia. These hair cells vibrate in response to sound waves and then converted into acoustical vibrations. Exposure to loud music kills hair cells which affects the auditory parts of the brain giving the perception of sound.

There is yet to be a specific tinnitus treatment to be fully developed. Sufferers may have to learn to live with and cope with their condition. A series of tests can be done to identify if the ringing in the ears is a symptom of an underlying serious disease. A hearing test, CT scan and MIR can be done to give a full check-up. It is also recommended that a full physical examination should be done to rule out any other fatal illness.

It is strongly recommended that patients take extra pre-caution when exposed to loud music. Wear ear bud or ear muffs when exposed to loud sounds. Play music in low tolerable levels. Ringing of the ears can also be caused by stressful situations. Identify these stress triggers and avoid them as much as possible. Ringing in ears can also be caused by high blood pressure, so do not neglect to take high blood pressure medication. If you’re tinnitus is severe, lessen the use of Q-tips or cotton swabs. Look for a safer alternative instead.

Your work place should be following the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standards so that you know that you are working in a safe environment. Also, you might be required to wear earmuffs or earplugs to protect your ears. You need to follow conversation guidelines that are set by your employer.

Can you relate to this? As a Tinnitussufferer does it speak to you? Or is this like so many doctors you have surely saw and you didnt relate to?

When it comes to tinnitus there is no easy explanation. There are actually many sounds associated with tinnitus and patients suffering from the condition could fall all over the board when it comes to the types of sounds they hear. The more you learn about the condition of tinnitus, the better able you are to understand what causes the sounds of tinnitus and why people experience different sounds.

The sounds of tinnitus are one of the most mysterious things about the condition. There is such a wide range of different sounds that people experience with this condition that it can be mysterious to the people suffering as well as to doctors and specialists trying to treat the condition. There are so many different types of sounds that someone can experience with tinnitus. Different people may hear different sounds of tinnitus or the same person may experience different sounds at different times.

One of the most distressing aspects of the condition is the sounds of tinnitus. This is because the sounds themselves can be loud and stressful and also that many patients feel they are going crazy or losing their mind. Especially before you really understand the condition that you have, it can be very frightening to hear sounds that no one else can hear.

Examples of Sounds of Tinnitus
Here are some examples:

  • Ringing
  • Buzzing
  • Hissing
  • Chirping
  • Whizzing
  • Rushing
  • Pulsing
  • And more

Some people have said that their tinnitus sounds resemble the high pitched squeal from many computer monitors or TVS. Other people say that theirs sounds like rushing water or breaking glass and even some say it sounds like chainsaws.

Still some sounds of tinnitus are the rhythmic noise caused by the sufferers pulse. This is referred to as pulsatile tinnitus. Often the type of tinnitus or the cause of tinnitus affects the sounds of tinnitus. This is why your symptoms can often help you determine what caused your tinnitus.

The tinnitus noises can also vary in intensity. Some sufferers have only a mild case that seems to be a faint background noise where others have loud, even deafening sounds of tinnitus. Studies have been done on this time and time again to determine the different levels of loudness tinnitus patients suffer from in comparison to one another and also over time while they have the condition.

Some people hear the sounds of tinnitus in only one ear where others hear it in both ears. Some people hear it start in one ear and then progress to the other ear. The varying sounds of tinnitus can be based upon many different things such as stress, your personal health, the type of tinnitus you have, what caused your tinnitus and more.
